Sterling Silver Designer Jewelry Maintenance

Sterling Silver RingSterling silver (sometimes just called sterling) is a very popular metal for making jewelry, but silver on its own is too soft of a metal to use alone. Silver has to be mixed with another metal to become hard enough to make a quality piece of jewelry. This is where sterling comes into play. Sterling is silver that has been mixed with another metal to strengthen it. For a metal to qualify for the sterling rating, it has to be 92.5 percent of pure silver. Designer Jewelry made from this metal is chic and fantastic, blending beautifully with many styles of clothing, as well as all the various gemstones. However, to keep it top condition the right maintenance needs to be performed on it on a regular basis.

Tips for Maintaining Sterling Silver Jewelry

  • When just removing dust or light tarnish from sterling jewelry, you can simply wipe it off with a clean soft cloth. Remember that this jewelry can be scratched, so do not just use paper towels to wipe it.
  • While some tarnish may make your sterling pieces look a bit antique, you may want your pieces to shine once again. There are pastes and liquids specially designed to clean your sterling silver such as Tarnex. You rub Tarnex cleaner on with an applicator, rubbing gently until you have the tarnish completely gone. Then rinse under warm water and dry with a soft cloth. Some liquids may be designed to dip the jewelry in rather than rubbing them on, so make sure to check the directions.
  • After cleaning the jewelry, make sure to store sterling silver jewelry properly.  If you have more than one piece of sterling to store, keep each piece in its own separate bag.

* It is important to note that if there are any gemstones in your jewelry or the sterling silver contains oxidation, that you do not use a tarnish remover.  Tips to clean gemstones and oxidized sterling silver to come soon!

Sterling silver jewelry is captivating and exquisite; proper care and maintenance will ensure that your collection stay gleaming and bright for years to come!
